Located in central Niagara, the largely rural Town of Pelham encompases the small former hamlets and villages of Effingham, Fenwick, Fonthill, North Pelham and Ridgeville. Located at the geographically highest point in Niagara, between the Niagara Escarpment and the Welland River, the town spreads its 14,700 residents over a 125-square-kilometre area. It's rolling hills reach into the beautiful Short Hills Provincial Park, along the Niagara Escarpment.
Cash crop and livestock farms are interspersed with stables that draw riders from a wide diameter. Like its neighbours to the north, Pelham also has its share of tender fruit and grape vineyards. The urbanized Fonthill area has undergone a building boom over the past decade, drawing both new businesses and new neighborhoods.
Attractions include the astonishing Comfort Maple, the area's oldest living sugar maple tree, measuring nearly 30 metres tall and 28 metres wide, located on Metler Road in North Pelham; Pelham Art Festival in mid-May; Fenwick Lions Carnival in late May; St. John's Conservation Area, a superb hiking venue with a stocked trout pond; and sand quaries on the Fonthill Kame.
