Though some still have trouble pronouncing his last name and the instrument he plays, Jake Shimabukuro (she-ma-BOOkoo-row) is recognized as one of the world's most exciting and innovative ukulele players and composers. Playing from jazz to classical to rock, Shimabukuro's mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than the traditional Hawaiian music — or corny showbiz routines — often associated with it. His career skyrocketed when a YouTube clip of him performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in Central Park went viral – more than eight million views and counting. Jake has swept onto the international stage and toured with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, collaborated with Ziggy Marley and is a semi-regular member of Jimmy Buffet's Coral Reefers band. With his light-speed finger work, he plays original pieces and covers songs by artists ranging from Bach to Michael Jackson. For tickets and more information, please visit www.arts.brocku.ca.
