Under the guidance of pro golfer John Daly, this course offers perhaps one of the most dynamic golfing experiences in Canada. And that’s no exaggeration.Set against a backdrop of one of the world’s most dramatic vistas, Niagara Falls, John Daly’s Thundering Waters is known as the ‘shot-makers golf course’ or a ‘thinking players golf course’. But don’t let those descriptions intimidate the novice in you. Pack up your clubs, climb aboard your cart, and prepare to “manage the course” says John Sharpe, Director of Golf. “On some courses you can just pull out any club and you’re off, but here, when you’re on that T-deck, you have to think through the hole.”
Thundering Waters has five T-decks representing significant changes in the dynamics of each hole. Spread over 200 yards, the ‘slope ratings’ range from 117 to 149, representing easiest to most difficult, with a rating of 154 on the back nine, making this course one of the most challenging in Canada.
Built on property that once housed Canadian Pacific’s largest rail yard, the course continues to receive international recognition as one of the most environmentally-friendly transformations. Etched out of dense forest, mature trees cover fully one-third of the course, and fairways dip and curve just a mere 1500 yards from one of the nature’s most powerful sites. Look up and you can see the mist rising from Horseshoe Falls, and listen and you’ll hear the thundering waters that give the course its name.
But it’s not just the sand traps, doglegs, water and treed fairways that make this course unique, says Sharpe. It’s also the risk/reward factor built into each hole, and that, he says, is John Daly’s personal philosophy. “If you want to take the risk, you might get the reward.” So if you’re looking for that John Daly signature hole, it’s in every one of them.
